GREAT GROWING SEASON
Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 -- 9:31 AM
Despite some unseasonably cool weather, it has been good growing season so far, says UW-Extension Crops and Soils agent Richard Halopka. We haven?t been as dry as in recent years, and while we're definitely lacking in warmth, it could be a blessing in disguise. Excessive heat would probably cause more crop stress this summer, he says.
We?ve had about 729 growing degree-days in May and June, well below the five-year average of 824.4.
Halopka says leaf hopper numbers seem low now, but could pick up in the next few weeks.
