KREITLOW: SENATE TRYING TO FIX LOOPHOLE

Monday, June 22nd, 2009 -- 12:14 PM

We talked with State Senator Pat Kreitlow about the issue Monday morning.

He says the State Senate is trying to close a loophole that allows developers to take advantage of the tax law.

"There are a whole lot of non-farmers taking advantage of Use Value Assessment," Kreitlow explains, "they're taking agricultural land that they have every intention of developing, putting a few token stalks of corn on it, calling it 'ag land,' and reaping a tax benefit that was not intended for them."

Kreitlow supports the measure, and believes the Farm Bureau is making too much out of the proposed change.

"I believe the Farm Bureau group, which has more than its share of non-farm members, is not looking out for the farm families that benefit the most from it, and are, in fact, trying to protect the loophole that exists right now," he says.

Kreitlow isn?t sure if the provision will survive budget discussions this week.
