June is Dairy Month!Michelle Meilke with the Wisconsin Dairy Council says milk isn?t just good for our bones.
"It really has a very high economic impact on our state: $20.6-billion in economic activity per year," Meilke notes, "so, everytime you see a dairy cow, that represents $17,000 of local impact into the economy."
While other states? dairy sectors are contracting, Meilke says Wisconsin has plenty of room for growth.
"We've had some growth in the dairy industry with the number of cheese plants, we continue to grow in specialty cheese markets. We have lots of room for growth with our abundant natural resources," she notes.
A recent report found 'Wisconsin's' sales of specialty cheeses jumped 17% last year.
The Wisconsin Dairy Council has launched a new website that builds on the local foods movement: www.eatlocaldairy.com.
