Wisconsin Disability Advocates Say Several Factors Could Make it Harder for Some Adults to Live Independently

Thursday, October 22nd, 2026 -- 12:00 PM

(Wisconsin Radio Network) Wisconsin disability advocates say potential Medicaid cuts, caregiver burnout and a shortage of accessible housing could make it harder for people with disabilities and older adults to live independently.

According to the Wisconsin Radio Network, during a recent disability and aging forum, Fox Valley self-advocate Carl Schulze warned federal Medicaid reductions could lead states to cut home and community-based services, potentially forcing more people into institutional care.

Caregiver advocates say many families are already stretched thin. Wisconsin Respite Care Association Executive Director Lisa Schneider said people often seek help only after reaching a crisis point, highlighting the need for expanded respite and support services.

Housing remains another major concern. Wisconsin Coalition of Independent Living Centers Executive Director Jason Glozier said much of Wisconsin’s housing stock predates modern accessibility standards, limiting options for people with disabilities.

Advocates are urging lawmakers to invest in home care services, caregiver support and more affordable, accessible housing during the next legislative session.
