Mental Health Advocates Say Families, Schools, and Others Play a Role in Supporting LGBTQ Youth

Wednesday, October 21st, 2026 -- 1:00 PM

(Wisconsin Radio Network) Mental health advocates say families, schools and communities all play a role in supporting LGBTQ youth and improving their well-being.

According to the Wisconsin Radio Network, the Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health recently released a fact sheet with recommendations for parents, educators and policymakers.

Amy Marsman, a senior research analyst with the agency, said support starts at home. “They can really focus on building a bond and a connection with their child,” Marsman said. “It’s really about trying to provide a kind and welcoming space for them at home and in conversation with them.”

Schools can also make a significant difference. Marsman said staff should be trained to create welcoming environments for LGBTQ students and know “how to maybe interrupt if kids are using language or LGBTQ words as put downs.”

The fact sheet also encourages policymakers to strengthen anti-bullying efforts and invest in youth programs. Marsman pointed to “after school programming or what we would call third spaces, places where kids and youth can go to a welcoming, positive environment after school.”

Additional resources for families and educators are available through the Office of Children’s Mental Health website.
