October is Still an Important Month for Lawn Care

Thursday, October 8th, 2026 -- 8:00 AM

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) October is an important month for lawn care in Wisconsin, but not every fall maintenance task is still recommended, according to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection.

According to Bruce Spangenberg, a horticulture outreach specialist with the UW-Madison Division of Extension, cool-season grasses continue growing during the fall as temperatures decline, making the timing of lawn treatments especially important.

One practice that is largely too late in October is overseeding. The preferred window for establishing new grass or filling thin areas is late August through early September, when warm soil promotes rapid germination.

Grass seedlings generally need four to six weeks to become established before hard freezes arrive. Seeding in October therefore carries a higher risk of poor establishment and winter damage, making it better to wait until next year.

Nitrogen fertilization also requires careful timing. Applying nitrogen in early fall can support healthy growth, but fertilizing too late can encourage excessive leaf growth as winter approaches.

A lush lawn entering winter can be more vulnerable to problems such as snow mold. Low- and medium-maintenance lawns generally should not receive nitrogen in October. However, an early October application may still be appropriate for lawns managed at a high-maintenance level.

Core aeration remains a useful October task. It can benefit lawns affected by compacted soil, shallow topsoil over clay, poor drainage or thatch-related problems. Aeration removes small plugs of soil from the lawn, creating openings that allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone.

The process can also encourage stronger root development during the remaining fall-growing period. Homeowners can rent core aerators from equipment rental businesses or hire lawn-care professionals.

Machines that remove soil cores are preferable to equipment that simply creates holes. Aeration can also be combined with a light application of quality topsoil or compost. For the best results, the soil should contain adequate moisture when the lawn is aerated.

October is also a suitable time to manage broadleaf weeds with herbicides, provided the weeds are still actively growing. Homeowners should carefully read and follow product label instructions.

Liquid herbicides sprayed directly onto visible weeds generally provide better results than granular products. Spot-treating weeds rather than applying herbicide across the entire lawn can also reduce unnecessary chemical use.
