(WEAU Staff, WEAU) One person is dead, and others are hurt following an SUV vs. buggy crash in Monroe County, according to WEAU staff.

According to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, on Sept. 4, 2026, at around 3:35 p.m., authorities received a report of crash on State Hwy 131 between County Hwy A and Irondale Avenue in the Town of Tomah.

Emergency responders took the injured people to a hospital, however, one of the occupants of the buggy later died due to their injuries. The press release says deputies determined that both vehicles were traveling southbound up the hill when a 38-year-old woman from Tomah driving an SUV struck the buggy.

The driver of the Volkswagen said she had a sneezing fit just before the crash and hadn’t seen the buggy. Per the press release, the driver was also trapped in her vehicle but was later able to get out before being taken to the hospital.

Four other occupants in the buggy, ranging from 18-months old to 24-years-old, suffered serious injuries and remain hospitalized. The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to a hospital but was later released. The crash is under investigation.
