Scattered Rainfall and Humid Weather Push Crops to Maturity

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin farmers had an average of 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending September 6, 2026, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.

According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, hot, humid conditions combined with scattered rainfall helped corn and soybean crops move closer to maturity. However, officials noted that some areas may have received rain too late to significantly improve crop conditions.

Vegetable harvesting for processing also remained underway. Topsoil moisture was reported as 13% very short, 28% short, 57% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels were 10% very short, 26% short, 63% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn development continued ahead of normal in some areas. About 93% of the crop had reached the dough stage, exceeding the five-year average of 88%. Denting had reached 57%, while 14% of the crop was mature.

Silage harvest was 14% complete, compared with the average of 8%. Corn rated good to excellent remained at 62%. Soybeans were also progressing, with 12% beginning to drop leaves versus the five-year average of 5%.

Soybean condition slipped slightly to 60% good to excellent. Oat harvest reached 95%, matching the average. Winter wheat planting stood at 7%, below the 9% average. Pasture and range conditions declined to 42% good to excellent.
