Corn Box Hazards Webinar to be Held September 14th

Safety campaigns urge farmers not to enter grain-filled bins.

So are we sending the wrong message to children if we allow them to play in a sandbox full of corn? “Corn Box Hazards” will be featured in a free webinar Sept. 14 (2 p.m. ET, 1 p.m. CT) as part of the Childhood Agricultural Safety Network’s quarterly meeting. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.

Grain boxes have become popular attractions at farm shows, festivals and other agritourism events. However, in addition to desensitizing children to danger, a pile of corn carries with it other safety concerns and health risks. The webinar presenters will define corn boxes, discuss hazards and suggest safer alternatives to corn and grain.

• Melissa Ploeckelman Brown, outreach specialist, National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety.
• Cadrien Livingston, director of safety, Younglove Construction, Sioux City, Iowa.

The Childhood Agricultural Safety Network, established in 2000, is a coalition of more than 300 individuals and organizations dedicated to young people growing up safely on farms and ranches.

The network is facilitated by the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Safety and Health, Marshfield Clinic Research Institute. The National Children’s Center is one of 12 agricultural safety and health centers funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
