Dry Weather Continues to Stress Wisconsin's Crops

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin farmers had 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending August 9, 2026, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, dry weather continued across the state, with limited rainfall reported during the week. Topsoil moisture was rated 11% very short, 25% short, 63% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Subsoil moisture stood at 8% very short, 23% short, 67% adequate, and 2% surplus. Corn silking reached 86%, matching the five-year average, while 34% of the crop entered the dough stage. Corn rated good to excellent fell three points to 69%.

Soybean blooming reached 93%, ahead of the 89% average, and 70% of soybeans were setting pods. Soybean condition declined two points to 68% good to excellent. Oat harvest progressed to 57%, exceeding the 46% average.

Winter wheat harvest reached 85%, slightly below the 86% average. The third alfalfa cutting was 73% complete, ahead of the 66% average. Pasture and range conditions declined three points, with 51% rated good to excellent.
