Wildwood Zoo Announces the Passing of Grant the White-Tailed Deer

Wildwood Zoo is saddened to share the passing of Grant, our 16-year-old white-tailed deer buck, who peacefully passed away earlier this week from age-related causes.

Born at Wildwood Zoo in the spring of 2010, Grant was one of the last white-tailed deer born at our facility. Throughout his life, he became a familiar face to visitors, helping connect guests with one of Wisconsin's most recognizable native wildlife species.

Despite his advanced age, Grant entered this summer's growing season appearing strong and healthy, showing only a slight loss of body condition that is common in older deer.

One of his most remarkable features was his impressive antlers, which remained large and well-framed even in his senior years. Animal care staff found Grant peacefully resting in one of his favorite bedding areas among the berms in his habitat, where he appeared to have passed quietly and comfortably.

The appropriate tests were ran, and he came back negative for CWD. White-tailed deer are Wisconsin's most abundant large mammal and have long been an important part of Wood County's landscape.

After populations declined in the late 1800s due to overhunting and habitat loss, successful conservation efforts restored them throughout the state. Today, they remain one of Wisconsin's greatest wildlife conservation success stories.

Grant's long life reflects the excellent care provided by Wildwood Zoo's animal care team. We are grateful for the many years he spent as an ambassador for Wisconsin's native wildlife and for the memories he created with generations of visitors.
