Several Tornadoes Reported During July 20th Storms Including Near Stratford

(Caitlin Shuda, USA TODAY NETWORK - Wisconsin) Several strong thunderstorms developed across central Wisconsin the evening of July 20, leading to multiple tornado warnings and reports of tornadoes.

According to Caitlin Shuda with USA TODAY NETWORK - Wisconsin, as of about 9 p.m. July 20, Kevin Scharfenberg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay, told a USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporter there were three confirmed tornadoes near Stratford in Marathon County, near Zoar in Menominee County and near Tigerton in Shawano County.

At that time, Scharfenberg said the only damage the National Weather Service in Green Bay was aware of was minor damage to a home west of Stratford. Scharfenberg told the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporter the tornadoes were brief and did not last long.

Earlier in the evening, the National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for Marathon County, confirming a tornado was located 10 miles northeast of Marshfield, or 25 miles southwest of Wausau, and moving east at 20 mph. According to the National Weather Service, law enforcement had confirmed the tornado.

A tornado warning also was issued for central Wood County after a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 12 miles southwest of Marshfield, or 26 miles west of Wisconsin Rapids, at 7:55 p.m. July 20.

The rotation was radar indicated. The National Weather Service also issued a tornado warning for southeastern Marathon County and northeastern Portage County, after reports of a tornado located 5 miles southwest of Mosinee.

The tornado warnings for Marathon and Portage counties and Wood County were from separate storms, Scharfenberg said.
