On Friday, July 31, cyclists with the Western Route will gather their support teams and embark on a challenging three-day journey for the 42nd Annual Heroes Ride Bike Tour.

This event has its origins in 1985 when Tom Miller rode 1,244 miles to honor each Wisconsin service member who lost their life in the Vietnam War. His effort not only raised awareness for Vietnam veterans but also established the foundation for The Highground.

What began as a solitary expedition has evolved into the Heroes Ride, a cherished yearly tradition that honors the spirit of sacrifice and service. Cole Peterson, route leader for the Western Route since 2021, credits his grandfather, veteran Jerry Simon, for his love for the annual bike tour.

Jerry has ridden it since the very beginning. While not every rider can take on the full three-day journey, many join various segments, riding as far as they can, all united by a common cause.

Local veteran organizations and generous businesses provide snacks and meals, offering vital support along the route. Early Sunday morning, August 2, the Western Route riders will make their final push to arrive at The Highground between 10:30 and 11:30am.

Upon their arrival, they will be greeted by a community of Vietnam Veteran Reunion guests along with family and friends ready to shower them with the recognition and gratitude they deserve.

This event is more than just a ride; it represents months of dedication and preparation. Riders undergo intense training, secure sponsorships and mentally prepare for the challenges posed by the rigors of several days on the road, navigating everything from physical fatigue to unpredictable weather conditions.

The warm reception they receive upon reaching The Highground is moving, a testament to a mission that has facilitated healing and remembrance for over four decades. Riders gather on the plaza for the “Heroes Family” meal and a commemorative ceremony before returning home, making it one of the most deeply impactful events of the year.

The Heroes Ride, the organization’s largest and longest-running fundraiser, raised over $67,000 in 2025. These vital funds directly support life-changing veterans initiatives and everyday operations at The Highground.

The Highground enthusiastically welcomes returning riders and encourages new participants each year. It’s not too late to be part of this meaningful journey, join the Western Route today.
