The Highground Veteran Memorial’s Heroes Ride Bike Tour: The Eastern Route
Thursday, July 9th, 2026 -- 12:01 PM

On Friday, July 31, riders from the Eastern Route will load their support vehicles and embark on an impactful three-day journey for the 42nd Annual Heroes Ride Bike Tour.
This cherished event began in 1985 when Tom Miller courageously cycled 1,244 miles, each mile representing a Wisconsin service member lost during the Vietnam War. His efforts raised awareness for Vietnam veterans and helped establish The Highground.
Over the years, the Annual Bicycle Tour has evolved into the esteemed Heroes Ride. Curt Braatz, who started riding alongside his father at age 10, now leads what is proudly known as the Eastern Route.
Curt’s father, Jim, was the leader of this route for most of its existence. Jim has been riding for 41 years. This ride reflects the commitment required to sustain the ride, recognizing the importance of dedicating the physical effort to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
The Eastern Route begins in Appleton and winds through beautiful rural Wisconsin, passing through Waupaca, Plover, Miladore, and Marshfield. On the morning of Sunday, August 2, the riders will begin the final stretch of their journey.
Arriving at The Highground between 10:30 and 11:30am, they will be greeted by a community of Vietnam Veteran Reunion guests along with family and friends ready to shower them with the recognition and gratitude they deserve.
This event goes beyond a simple weekend excursion. Participants commit countless hours to training and preparation, overcoming significant physical challenges during the ride.
They endure blisters, muscle fatigue, sunburn, windburn and the whims of Wisconsin’s ever-changing weather. Upon reaching The Highground, they are greeted with heartfelt recognition, affirming a mission that has fostered healing and remembrance for over 40 years.
Following their long ride, participants gather for the "Heroes Family" meal and a short ceremony before heading home, making this one of the most poignant and impactful occasions of the year.
The Heroes Ride, the organization’s largest and longest-running fundraiser, raised over $67,000 in 2025. These vital funds directly support life-changing veterans initiatives and everyday operations at The Highground.
The Highground proudly welcomes returning riders and eagerly invites new participants each year. There is still time to get involved, join the Eastern Route today. Visit thehighgroundheroesride.com for route and rider registration information.
