Wisconsin State Patrol's July Law of the Month: Fast/Slow Lanes
Monday, July 6th, 2026 -- 11:00 AM
The Wisconsin State Patrol reminds drivers that slower traffic should keep right on interstates and multi-lane highways.
The July Law of the Month highlights the importance of maintaining a safe and efficient flow of traffic to reduce the risk of tailgating and rear-end crashes. According to Wisconsin state statute, any vehicle traveling less than the normal speed of traffic should drive in the right lane, except when passing or preparing for a left turn or authorized U-turn.
This applies when multiple lanes of traffic are moving in the same direction. Exceptions apply when approaching law enforcement, emergency responders, highway maintenance vehicles and stranded motorists stopped on the side of the road.
Wisconsin’s Move Over Law requires motorists to provide a safety zone by moving over or slowing down for workers with their lights on and certain disabled vehicles.
The Wisconsin State Patrol also wants to remind motorists that traffic patterns change in work zones. Drivers should always follow posted speed limits and plan ahead for potential slowdowns. Visit 511 Wisconsin for current travel conditions.
