RUSHING WATERS DANGEROUS

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 -- 12:14 PM

The spring melt combined with locally heavy rains have led to flooding in some part of the state.

The Rock River is causing flooding in the Rock County community of Newville. This morning, water surrounds several homes.

Jefferson County Emergency Management Director Donna Haugom says the region is vulnerable this time of year because the ground is still frozen or saturated and there's nowhere for the water to go.

Clark County has avoided flooding so far. There is a minor ice jam upstream from Lake Arbutus, but it hasn't caused any problems.

"If you drive around the county and look at the streams and rivers, you can see they're very full," says Emergency Management Director Jennifer Lord Kouraichai, "Especially with this rainfall, and not all the frost has come out of the ground. The water is running to the streams and rivers."

And, swollen rivers and streams are nothing to mess around with.

"In the springtime, a simple stream or creek and turn into something that looks more like a river. It's really important to keep your kids away from it," she says.
