The Highground’s Next CAMO Program: Bats

Monday, June 22nd, 2026 -- 12:01 PM

The Highground will be hosting a presentation about bats for their CAMO program in August.

You may wonder why The Highground is hosting a presentation about bats. An important part of better mental health comes from spending time outdoors. As an organization that includes 155 acres of woodlands and glacial moraine, staff and visitors to The Highground have encountered the occasional mosquito and other insects.

Besides being a nuisance, these insects can transmit several diseases. As part of the Community & Military Outreach (CAMO) program, we are bringing in an interesting and important community-focused presentation about important misunderstood wildlife that crucially helps control these pesky insects. On August 19, Department of Natural Resources Bat Ambassador Jennifer Summers will give a presentation about our Wisconsin bats at 6pm in the Theater Room.

This presentation will quell fears some may have of these nocturnal insect-eaters and educate attendees on the importance of having bats present and protected in our local community. Vital to many ecosystems, bats are major consumers of agricultural and forest pests and predators of biting insects.

They also play an important role in reducing the risk of insect-borne diseases such as the West Nile Virus. The Wisconsin Bat Ambassadors are a statewide group of Master Naturalists and others trained in bat education and public outreach.
