Colby Student Selected to Receive Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy
Tuesday, May 19th, 2026 -- 4:01 PM
The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy (SBL) is an award that formally recognizes high school graduates who have achieved a high level of proficiency in both English and one or more additional languages.
To earn this distinction, students must provide evidence of their skills through approved assessments, such as achieving a specific score on AP language exams or state-recognized proficiency tests.
Beyond just a credential, the Seal is important because it celebrates the student's diverse cultural background and linguistic assets, viewing their bilingualism as a valuable strength. It is rooted in the belief that all students should have access to the lifelong benefits of intercultural and global learning.
By obtaining the seal, students not only gain a competitive edge for future college and career opportunities but also receive official recognition for the dedication required to master multiple languages.
After years of hard work and restructuring curriculum, and adding Spanish classes to meet state requirements (starting Spanish in 6th grade), the Colby School District is proud to present the first recipient of the Seal of Biliteracy in the school to Derian.
The District also wants to thank Mrs. Bohl for her hard work with the Seal of Biliteracy.
