Marathon County Public Library Invites Everyone to Unearth a Story at All Library Locations
Monday, May 18th, 2026 -- 9:01 AM
Get ready to dig into a summer of discovery.
The Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) is thrilled to invite children, teens, and families to Unearth a Story in every MCPL location across the county all summer long.
In 2026, libraries throughout the nation will invite readers of all ages to “Unearth a Story,” a theme inspired by the wonder of dinosaurs, paleontology, and archaeology.
These fascinating subjects tap into a natural sense of curiosity and imagination, encouraging kids and families to ask questions, explore the past, and uncover something new.
Plus, in addition to exploring the history of the natural world, the library’s summer theme will also incorporate celebrations of America’s 250th birthday! Kids can enjoy Unearth a Story-inspired performances, craft activities, book displays, and, definitely not to be missed, an activity book that rewards them just for reading.
To participate, young patrons should visit their nearest MCPL location in June to pick up their own activity book; inside, they will find a complete list of upcoming activities as well as puzzles, a coloring page, and the summer reading program.
The Summer Reading Program encourages families to set custom daily reading goals, based on minutes, pages, or books. And to keep kids on track, the library is offering free books to children who meet their reading goals.
Families should bring activity books into the library throughout the summer as reading goals are met, and library staff members will reward them with fresh books to keep. If kids read consistently all summer long, they will even have a chance to spin the popular prize wheel.
Reading goals will vary based on ability and age. For example, an infant might listen to 2 books per day, and a 5th grader might read for 30 minutes per day. Teens can also join in the fun by asking their MCPL location for an activity packet designed just for 13–18-year-olds.
To earn popular book titles for their own age group, teens should complete their packets and turn them in by August 31. The library’s summer program has something for all ages, but it is especially geared towards school-age children, tweens, and teens.
This event is free and open to the public with no registration required. For more information, call 715-261-7220.
