AAA Projects 834,000 Wisconsinites Will Travel at Least 50 Miles From Home Memorial Day Weekend

Tuesday, May 12th, 2026 -- 2:01 PM

AAA expects nearly 45 million Americans to travel over the Memorial Day holiday, the highest total on record.

However, year-over-year growth is slowing with some states seeing small declines. AAA projects 834,000 Wisconsinites will travel at least 50 miles from home over Memorial Day weekend, a slight decrease from 2025.

While road trips and air travel have also edged lower, travel by other modes has increased. The five-day holiday travel period runs from Thursday, May 21, through Monday, May 25.

“Memorial Day travel demand remains strong, but higher fuel prices are slowing the pace of growth in some segments,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Some Wisconsinites are taking a more measured approach this year by shortening trips, choosing closer destinations, or making other cost-conscious adjustments.”

Most Wisconsin travelers will drive, with more than 744,000 expected to take road trips. Another 44,000 will fly, and 46,000 will travel by other modes such as bus, train, or cruise.
