On April 30, 2026 at approximately 11:38 a.m. Wood County Central Dispatch received the report of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of CTH H and CTH M in the Township of Auburndale.
A pickup truck hauling a flatbed trailer loaded with seed corn and soybeans was traveling westbound on CTH H approaching CTH M. A box truck was stopped at the stop sign on CTH M facing north.
The box truck failed to yield the right-of-way and the vehicles collided in the intersection of CTH H / CTH M. Both vehicles came to rest in the northwest ditch with the box truck on its side.
Both operators received minor injuries and were treated on scene by Marshfield Ambulance and released. The drivers were identified as 55-year-old Patrick Hollar of Milladore and 66-year-old Mark Miles of Black River Falls.
The Marshfield Fire Department also responded to the scene including hazmat. While hazmat was responding, it was reported that the one-ton pickup truck was fully involved in fire. Auburndale Volunteer Fire Department fully extinguished the fire prior to hazmat’s arrival.
When Marshfield Fire Department hazmat arrived on scene, personnel surveyed the area, began metering and testing the product, and started digging trenches to place booms and dikes to control the flow of the chemical in the ditch line.
A large amount of corn seed, which was the cargo on the flatbed trailer, was found scattered on the roadway along with a moderate amount of diesel fuel. After the vehicles were separated and removed from the ditch, catch basins were used to collect the remaining active leaks.
An entry team of two hazmat technicians entered the box truck and placed all leaking containers into overpack drums. Containment operations continued. Entering the ditch area, crews collected and placed all remaining leaking containers into overpack drums before sealing them shut.
Oil dry was used to contain the diesel fuel that was on the roadway. Once all hazardous materials were contained and all leaking had stopped, Marshfield hazmat units cleared the scene.
Auburndale Fire Department remained on scene awaiting the arrival of a cleanup contractor.
