Wausau City Council Fails to Implement 2026-28 Rules

Thursday, April 30th, 2026 -- 8:00 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) After nearly two hours of discussion and debate, the Wausau City Council has failed to implement its 2026-’28 rules, including a list of standing committees.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, much of the discussion centered on Mayor Doug Diny’s proposal to trim the committee structure from six to four, combining Finance and Human Resources into one committee and doing the same for Parks and Recreation and Infrastructure and Facilities.

Those in support of the item noted that it could bring more efficiencies to the decision-making process. Those opposed were concerned about things like lengthy meeting agendas for the combined committees and a lack of proper vetting.

Numerous amendments to the item were proposed before the final vote, which failed 6-5. The measure required a 2/3rds supermajority to pass. Alders Kilian, Wiskowski, Solnski, Hoenecke, Tierney, and Trueblood all voted yes. Larson, Watson, Neal, Martens, and Lukens voted no.

Diny participated in the discussion, turning the gavel over to Council President Terry Kilian for the item. As of Tuesday evening, no further committee or council meetings were scheduled for May.
