Neillsville Police Department Warns of Scam Call Received by Local Business
Tuesday, April 21st, 2026 -- 1:00 PM
The Neillsville Police Department has reported that a local business received a call from someone claiming to be a lieutenant with the United States Marshal’s Service.
The caller claimed counterfeit money had been deposited and demanded quick action. This is a scam that uses fear and impersonation. Law enforcement does not handle situations like this. Businesses should not respond; they should document the call details and report it to the Federal Trade Commission or local authorities.
Things to remember:
- The U.S. Marshal’s Service WILL NEVER ask for credit/debit card/gift card numbers, wire transfers, or bank routing numbers, or to make bitcoin deposits for any purpose.
- NEVER divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.
- Report scam phone calls to your local FBI office and to the Federal Trade Commission.
