Wisconsin's unemployment rate climbed 2% to 7.6% in January, according to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.A year ago, Wisconsin's jobless rate was only 4.9%.
The unemployment rate underscores the economic challenges the country faces, according to Secretary Roberta Gassman.
The national jobless rate for January was 8.5%, more than 3% higher than a year ago.
Gassman says Wisconsin lost an estimated 87,900 nonfarm jobs from December to January and private sector jobs shrank by 72,500. She says the state lost 13,500 manufacturing jobs in January.
