NEILLSVILLE DMV CENTER COULD CLOSE

Friday, February 20th, 2009 -- 11:38 AM

Area residents would have to drive farther to get their licenses under Gov. Jim Doyle?s budget proposal.

That proposal would close 40 of the current 88 DMV locations, including those in Neillsville and Abbotsford.

DMV officials say these 40 locations combined account for less than 3% of DMV's total transactions. Even with the proposed closings, it?s estimated 99% of Wisconsin residents will live within 50 miles of a DMV service center that will remain open under this proposal.

In 2008, 514 driver license and ID products were issued by Neillsville, ranking it 78th the 88 stations.

Other locations that could be cut include: Abbotsford, Black River Falls, Medford, Stanley, Tomah, Wautoma and Whitehall.

Marshfield, Eau Claire, Ladysmith, Wausau, LaCrosse and Wisconsin Rapids offices would all remain open under this proposal.

The state budget must be approved by the full legislature and approved by the Governor.
