Aspirus Stanley Hospital has been honored with the Dysphagia Award from the Wisconsin Stroke Coalition in recognition of the hospital’s commitment to high-quality stroke care and patient safety.
The award recognizes hospitals that demonstrate excellence in screening stroke patients for dysphagia, a swallowing disorder that can occur after a stroke and lead to serious complications if not identified early.
By ensuring patients are properly screened before receiving food, drink, or medication by mouth, care teams help prevent aspiration and improve recovery outcomes.
At Aspirus Stanley Hospital, a coordinated effort among nurses, physicians, and therapy teams ensures that stroke patients receive prompt dysphagia screening and appropriate follow-up care.
“This recognition reflects the dedication of our care teams who work diligently to provide safe, high-quality care for every patient who comes through our doors,” said Denise Carstensen, Director of Nursing, WI Northwest Division, Aspirus Health. “Early dysphagia screening is a critical step in stroke care, and our teams take great pride in ensuring patients receive the right care at the right time.”
The Wisconsin Stroke Coalition brings together hospitals, emergency medical services, and health care organizations from across the state to improve stroke care through collaboration, education, and quality improvement initiatives.
Carstensen received the award on behalf of Aspirus Stanley Hospital during the 7th Annual Coverdell Performance Improvement Awards in Madison on Tuesday, March 10. Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability in the United States.
Timely recognition and treatment, including critical safety measures like dysphagia screening, play an essential role in helping patients recover and return to their daily lives.
Aspirus Stanley Hospital’s recognition highlights the organization’s ongoing commitment to delivering evidence-based stroke care and improving outcomes for patients and families across the communities it serves.
