Wausau Emergency Police Recognize Man for 40 Years of Service

Imagine volunteering your time for 40 years to make Wausau a better place.
A man who has done just that was honored during the Wausau Emergency Police (WEP) annual banquet. This volunteer unit provided 1,800 of service to the Wausau community during the past year.
If you’ve attended any of Wausau’s outdoor special events throughout the year, you’ve likely seen these volunteer officers in action. They provide traffic control, pedestrian safety, and general event presence.
Their volunteer efforts are a great benefit to the police department and the entire community. The highlight of the banquet was when WEP Director Scott Dauel recognized Capt. Mike Lotharius for his four decades of service to the unit.
Mike had previously announced his intent to step down in a letter sent to WEP and Wausau PD leadership. That letter read, in part, “It is with many years of memories that I submit my letter of resignation to the Wausau Emergency Police."
"I’ve had the pleasure of serving as a voluntary Wausau Emergency Police Officer for the past 40 years. I want to thank the Wausau Police Department and the Wausau Emergency Police for allowing me to be a part something that [serves] our community. This organization will always hold a special place in my life.”
During his time with the WEP, Mike served under five police chiefs and five WEP directors. Wausau PD Lieutenant Jill Kurtzhals presented Mike with a plaque recognizing his amazing contribution to the Wausau community.
His example of service is inspiring, and the Department is grateful for his many years of commitment and friendship.
