BILL INSPIRED BY CLARK CO. VET
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 -- 9:31 AM
A Clark County veteran was the inspiration for a new bill pushed State Senator Pat Kreitlow. The Chippewa Falls Democrat has introduced a bill that would expand the Veteran?s Assistance Grant Program.
That program provides up to $7,500 to assist needy veterans and their families pay for things like medical treatment or dental care.
To qualify, the applicant's income must be less than 130% of the federal poverty level; but, in discussions with the Clark County Veterans Service Office, Kreitlow learned some vets meet those requirements, but were disqualified because of small life insurance policies.
The bill, which Kreitlow expects to pass through the legislature easily, simply removes the cash value of life insurance from the list of assets that count against eligibility.
