COOKIES, ANYONE?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 -- 12:12 PM

Area Girl Scouts will wrap up their annual cookie sale this weekend, but there will still be opportunities to buy cookies.

The sale has been a staple for the scouts since 1917. It?s a fundraiser, but also teachers the scouts important skills.

"It's primary purpose is not a fundraiser; it's primary purpose is a financial literacy program for the girls," says Ann Saris with the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes.

When you think of it, the cookie sale is basically like running a very, very small business for a month.

The scouts set personal and team goals, develop a marketing plan and must live within a budget.

"And then the follow through of handling the money and following through with customers," Saris says, "And, if they don't reach their goal, going back to their budget and adjusting things so they can abide by their budget."

Girl Scout cookies are not affected by a recent salmonella outbreak affecting peanut butter paste.

"They have narrowed that concern down to one source. None of the peanut butter used in girl scout cookies is from that source. They are completely safe," Saris says.

If you?d like to purchase cookies, but haven?t had a scout coming knocking yet, you can contact your local troop leader by February 1, or you can look for special on-location sales in the coming weeks.

If you were lucky enough to order some cookies, you can expect delivery by early March.
