PLUNGE COMING SOON

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 -- 11:36 AM

It might be a month off, but organizers of this year?s Rotary Polar Bear Plunge are urging area groups to start fundraising now.

The Plunge will be held Saturday, February 28, as part of the Neillsville Winter Carnival.

"It's going to be behind Degan's Sports Zone, which used to the American Legion, on O'Neill Creek," explains Mike Lacey, "We cut a hole in the ice. We have a metal cage we put in the hole. People jump in the water. They can't float away or get lost."

While the Rotary facilitates the event, it actually serves as a fundraiser for a number of area non-profits.

"We give them at least 90% of it back," he says, "If you're the highest pledge-raiser, you get 100% of your funds back, plus $250 we supply through Rotary."

It?s estimated $50,000 has been raised in the five years the plunge has been held.
