Be Safe if Using a Space Heater During Bitter Cold Temperatures

Friday, January 23rd, 2026 -- 9:00 AM

As colder weather sets in, many homes rely on space heaters and other alternative heating sources.

Unfortunately, this is also the time of year when we see a rise in fires related to unsafe heater use. Recently, a local fire department responded to a fire involving a space heater that highlights how quickly these situations can escalate when heaters are placed too close to combustible items, plugged into overloaded outlets, or left unattended.

Some area fire departments offer the following safety tips:

  • Keep heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
  • Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet
  • Never leave heaters unattended or running while sleeping
  • Use heaters that are properly certified and in good condition

Taking a moment to consider a few simple precautions can make a significant difference in keeping your home and family safe this winter.
