Wildwood Zoo Asking Residents to Be Respectful of Their Animals After Incident Involving Malakai the Wolf
Monday, January 19th, 2026 -- 11:01 AM
Wildwood Zoo in Marshfield is asking residents to be respectful of the animals.
Recently, the zoo staff discovered that a ball had been thrown into the wolf exhibit by a guest. Because the item was made of soft plastic, the wolf, Malakai, chewed on it and, as a result, he is now being closely monitored by animal care staff for any signs of discomfort.
Staff was fortunate enough to find the majority of the toy, but incidents like this can pose serious health risks to the animals. Additionally, staff observed a visitor throwing food into the wolf exhibit.
Please understand that Malakai does not need outside food. He receives a carefully planned diet every day that meets his nutritional needs and closely mirrors what wolves would naturally eat in the wild. Human food, including fast food or homemade, can be very harmful to his health.
The zoo loves that Malakai is easily visible from the driving path and that guests enjoy seeing him up close. With that privilege comes the responsibility to treat him with care and respect.
For the safety and well-being of the animals, please never throw objects or food into any exhibit. If you are interested in supporting Malakai and our other animals in a positive way, they welcome donations of approved enrichment or food items.
Please feel free to message them to learn more. They thank you for helping them keep the animals safe and healthy.
