Neillsville City Council Approves Tourism Committee Room Tax Grant

The Neillsville City Council discussed a Tourism Committee Room Tax Grant.
City Clerk Rex Roehl reported on receiving a $1,000 Neillsville Tourism Committee Room Tax Grant for Historic Preservation Commission Landmark plaques, which the Council approved. City Clerk Roehl also reported on receiving a $10,000 donation from Wayne Gross for Cliff’s Park, which the Council accepted.
City Clerk Roehl presented the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs Division of Emergency Management – Cyber Security Grant (Cycle 1 – 3rd Quarter, 2025) in the amount of $10,968.05. The Council accepted the grant and appropriated $5,894.82 to City Hall and $5,073.23 to Police Department Administration.
City Clerk Roehl presented the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics – Airport Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for Wisconsin Airports in the amount of $570.85, which the Council accepted, with one member voting no.
Mayor Dewey Poeschel presented the old landfill Hunting Land Lease renewal for three years from Paul Rose and John Johnson in the amount of $1,200 per year. Director of Public Works Luke Friemoth stated that there have been no problems.
Council Member Dan Clough asked about their request for a lock to be placed on the gate. Council Member Rolly Gelhaus stated that he would like to see it opened up for a bid again, not an automatic renewal. How many bids were received last time?
Director of Public Works Friemoth stated there is no issue with them placing a lock on the gate, everything went smoothly and there were three bidders last year, this first year was a trial period.
The Council approved to accept the old landfill Hunting Land Lease agreement for three years (2026, 2027, 2028) in the amount of $1,200 per year, with two aldermen voting no.
City Clerk Roehl reported that Fourth Ward Council Member Clarissa Rochester has filed Notification of Non-Candidacy and will not be seeking re-election in 2026.
Council Member Barb Petkovsek reported on the December 16, 2025 meeting of the Grants Committee regarding reviewing and updating the list of grants in progress.
Council Member Clough reported on the December 17, 2025 meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission regarding:
- Discussion on and approval of the purchase of two bronze Historic Landmark plaques for $1,458;
- Received a $1,000 Tourism Room Tax grant towards the Historic Marker plaques;
- Update on the 1897 Clark County Jail building;
- Discussion on Historic Preservation Commission website status and self-guided Cemetery Tour status;
- And update on fund balances.
Council Member Clough reported on the December 23, 2025 meeting of the Commission on Public Works/Utilities regarding:
- Current activities;
- And payment of bills.
Finally, during public appearances, a resident stated that the City has Dirks Group working on things and the taxpayers have a right to view the City Council meetings. The City should do like Clark County does it.
