After 47 Years, Granton Man Will Receive His High School Diploma
Wednesday, December 24th, 2025 -- 10:00 AM
Jeff Handt, Sr. was originally set to graduate from Granton High School in 1979, but instead chose to serve our country by joining the United States Marines to help defend our American freedoms.
After completing his military service, Jeff always hoped to finish his education, but, as life often does, other responsibilities and obstacles stood in the way. This past summer, Jeff reached out to Dr. Schoessow, 7th-12th grade English teacher at Granton, to ask what it would take to finally fulfill his lifelong dream of earning his high school diploma.
Through an independent study, Jeff committed himself to the challenge, writing a powerful series of essays reflecting on his time in the military, his career, and the obstacles he faced without a diploma.
On Monday, Mr. Handt stepped back into the classroom and spoke to Dr. Schoessow’s middle school and high school English classes, tailoring his message to each age group.
Students read the majority of his essays and engaged in thoughtful Q&A sessions, gaining insight, perspective, and advice Jeff wished he had received when he was their age.
This May, Jeff Handt, Sr., will walk across the stage and officially earn his high school diploma. His journey is a powerful reminder that no matter our age, or what life throws our way, dreams are always within reach through hard work, perseverance, and dedication.
