"THRILL KILL" PROMPTS TRAIL CLOSING

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009 -- 9:23 AM

A big chunk of Waupaca County?s snowmobile trails have been closed after some snowmobilers apparently killed five deer for kicks.

Now, angry area sledders have raised $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the culprits.

Four deer were found dead. A fifth deer with broken legs had to be euthanized as a result of the rampage in the pre-dawn hours Saturday about five miles south of Waupaca.

Tracks show the snowmobilers chased the deer back toward the others so they could run them down.

Landowner Virginia Niemuth immediately shut off access to her property, closing five miles of the main snowmobile trail across Waupaca County.

The reward money includes $7,500 offered by six snowmobile clubs and another $1,500 offered by Waupaca County Crime Stoppers and the Fox Valley Humane Association.
