Marshfield Fire Department Offers Christmas Tree and Decoration Safety Tips
Tuesday, December 9th, 2025 -- 10:01 AM
As we head into the holiday season, the Marshfield Fire Department is reminding everyone how important it is to keep our families and our community safe.
Wisconsin has already experienced 53 fire deaths this year, and every one of them is a reminder that a few simple steps can make a real difference. The holidays bring joy, but they also carry risks we see every year.
A few reminders that go a long way:
Christmas Tree Safety
- Water your tree every day. A dry tree can ignite in seconds.
- Keep trees at least 3 feet from heat sources: fireplaces, space heaters, candles, floor vents, and radiators.
- If you’re using an artificial tree, make sure it’s labeled “fire-resistant.”
Lights & Decorations
- Inspect light strings for worn wires or broken bulbs before hanging.
- Only use UL-listed lights and extension cords.
- Never overload outlets.
- Turn everything off before bed or when leaving home.
From all of us at Marshfield Fire & Rescue Department, stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy a fire-smart holiday season.
