LOCAL FOODS SUMMIT
Monday, January 5th, 2009 -- 8:31 AM
A group hoping to get us eating more locally produced foods will hold their 3rd Annual Summit next week. The Wisconsin Local Food Network?s summit will be held in Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday and Friday. Andrew Dane, one of the organizers of the Local Food Summit,
says there has been an up-tick in interest about the local foods market.
Farmers? markets are gaining in popularity, but the real work is happening behind the scenes as producers work with schools, restaurants and grocery stores in an attempt to get them to buy local.
"(People) in the state spend something like $19-billion a year on food," Dane notes, "If we can spend a little bit more of that supporting local farmers, instead of shipping those dollars to California, Mexico or Peru, that could have a big economic impact."
