WINTER WONDERLAND WRAPPING UP

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 -- 12:26 PM

A popular area attraction is winding down Wednesday after a successful third year.

The Marshfield Rotary Winter Wonderland is a massive Christmas light-display at Wildwood Park.

"Our show is bigger and more efficient than it's ever been," says Shannon Nienast, who chaired of the event this year. "We did do one census on a Saturday. In an hour, we had people coming from Phillips, Medford, St. Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Milwaukee, Minnesota and Iowa. The word is really get out on it."

The display features over 360,000 lights. There were some new features this year, and organizers are already thinking ahead to 2009, Nienast says.

In just three years, over 90,000 no-perishable food items have been collected for area pantries at a time when they really need the help.

"Our donations went to about a half-dozen food pantries very close to Marshfield, this year, we had food pantries calling us all the way to Mosinee. We're trying to do our part," he says, "We are trying to do our part to get as much food to 22 food pantries. The demand has been a lot great this year."

Around 1,200 volunteers help put on the show every year.

Again, you still catch the display Wednesday night. The public is also invited to help take down the lights this Saturday, January 3 and next Saturday, January 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
