WATER RATE HIKE IN COLBY
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 -- 12:14 PM
The City of Colby might start looking for water elsewhere as problems with the utility have led to a request for an 81-percent rate hike.Residential customers now paying $2.73 per 1,000 gallons would pay $4.94 if the application is approved as submitted.
The utility faces a loss of $70,468 next year without an increase.
Colby is one of several communities along STH 29 that have had trouble finding water. They are in discussions with Wausau. That city has water to spare and may pipe it to Abbotsford and Colby.
The 30-mile pipeline could be expensive, though. A seven-mile pipeline from Wausau to Brokaw was bid at about $1 million.
