GRASSLAND DAIRY DEVELOPING NEW PRODUCTS, MARKETS

Monday, December 29th, 2008 -- 11:27 AM

A venerable area company continues to change with the times.

Grassland Dairy Products near Greenwood has been making butter for over 100 years. They recently received some state help to develop and market a couple new products.

"We're developing a spreadable butter that's spreadable right out of the refrigerator," explains Trevor Wuettrich of Grassland Dairy, "It comes in an 8-ounce tub. We're selling a little bit of it locally, but our plans are to go nationally."

Grassland is also pushing a high-fat, European-style butter, which is especially popular with bakers.

"(It's) 82% fat versus U.S. standard butter, which is 80% fat," he explains, "We've got some cultured flavors in there, to give it more European attributes."

Although the economy is down, and butter sales aren?t great, the company is rolling with the punches. The butter market recently led Grassland to sell butter overseas in places like Russia, Japan, China and South America.

Grassland recently received an $11,000 Value Added Dairy Initiative Dairy processor grant to help market the products.
