AMISH VS. PREMISES I.D.
Monday, December 29th, 2008 -- 11:16 AM
News of the Amish?s legal battle against the state's Premises Identification Law is spreading. In what he calls a ?test case?, Clark County District Attorney Darwin Zwieg cited an Amish man from Loyal for failing to comply with a Wisconsin law requiring livestock owners to register their properties with the state.
Many Old Order Amish farmers say the policy is the first step toward the eventual tagging of all animals, or the Mark of the Beast.
Paul-Martin Griepentrog, of Park Falls, recently filed a ?Friend of the Court? brief in support of the defendant. According to the document, he?s fighting his own battle against the requirement.
While he says it violates his Judeo-Christian beliefs, he also claims the rule violates Article 1, Section 14 of the Wisconsin Constitution; which seemingly prohibits ?feudal tenure? on privately owned property.
The case is set for a scheduling hearing March 20th.
