SNOWMOBILE TRAILS TO OPEN

Friday, December 26th, 2008 -- 11:36 AM

For the second straight year, Clark County?s massive snowmobile trail system will open before January.

Last year?s season will go down as one of the best on record. The trails were open from December 24th through mid-March.

Brian Duell of the Clark County Forestry and Parks Department says Clark County?s 357 miles of trails will open at 3 p.m. this afternoon; but, warm weather and the threat of rain will lead to varying conditions.

"They're good in the south, but as you travel north, they're marginal," Duell says, "The snow we received last week was very light, and pretty much, just blew across the open fields, so this wet, heavier snow is starting to build a base."

Duell reminds operators to respect the landowner?s property. About 2/3?s of the trail system is on private land.

Duell also encourages snowmobilers to get involved in local clubs, who maintain the routes.

"There's a lot of work that these clubs do...we struggle to get enough help to these clubs to get the trails open," Duell comments, "It is walking a fine-line with these clubs, if the trails are even going to open."

He said some interest in the sport was renewed with last year's excellent conditions.
