Wausau City Council Approves Designation of Eastgate Hall as Historic Landmark
Monday, November 3rd, 2025 -- 8:01 AM
(Desiree Fischer, WSAW) The Wausau City Council voted Tuesday night to approve the designation of Eastgate Hall as a historic landmark.
According to Desiree Fischer with WSAW, the building, located on the east side of Marathon Park, was built in the 1930s by the National Youth Administration. It has hosted many significant events, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s visit to Wausau in 1967.
The Wausau Plan Commission, the Marathon County Park Commission and the Marathon County Human Resources, Finance and Property Committee had initially approved only the stone wing of the building to be landmarked, citing significant changes that had been made to the main portion of the building.
At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, the council voted on an amended motion that included the entire building. The motion passed 9-2.
