(Cooper Wild, WAOW) -Wausau, Wisconsin has been recognized as one of the top 30 hidden gems to live, in the United States, securing the third spot on the list.
According to Cooper Wild with WAOW, this recognition comes from a survey conducted by GoBankingRates, which evaluated housing and livability data nationwide. Mayor Doug Diny of Wausau shared his thoughts on the housing market in the city.
"I had a realtor recently show me that our housing market is a great little spot here in the Midwest compared to other markets, so housing is in demand because people want to live here, it's a great place to live," said Diny. "Is it a direct result of what we are doing? I'd like to think so but I think we are moving in the right direction."
One key factor contributing to Wausau's high ranking is the average home value of just over $238,000, significantly below the statewide average of over $335,000.
The availability and affordability of apartments also played a role in the city's placement. Randy Fifrick, development director with the city of Wausau, highlighted the city's livability and outdoor attractions.
"But really, the city of Wausau is a great place to live, you look at what they talked about in there in terms of livability, affordability, and outdoor recreation. It's a great resource we are very fortunate to have all the different things that we do here," said Fifrick. "I love the outdoor recreation, that's why I live here, it is just a gem."
Wausau offers a variety of recreational activities and entertainment options, from the riverfront to public parks and the 400 Block. "The opportunity to have what we have with the river, lakes, fishing, hunting, biking. We have a great trail system in the area, the events are awesome. We just have so many great things that come together to make this area great," said Fifrick.
Mayor Diny emphasized the city's appeal to newcomers. "I think Tim (White) from CVB (Visit Wausau) likes to say it's a first date. You get somebody here to Wausau and you can get them hooked, and we will keep em here. So I think that's the key," said Diny.
Both Fifrick and Diny expressed that while they do not actively seek recognitions like this, it motivates them to continue their efforts in making Wausau a great place to live.
