Wausau Police Have Seized More Than 1,800 Grams of Methamphetamine Since July

Wednesday, October 29th, 2025 -- 10:00 AM

(Sean White, WSAW) Police have seized more than 1,800 grams of methamphetamine just since July, marking a significant increase in drug enforcement activity.

According to Sean White with WSAW, the Wausau Police Department said the seizures don’t indicate the city is overrun with drug-related crimes. Instead, officials credit unique resources and programs for the increased successes.

“Our seizures of methamphetamine have increased year to year. And that is the type of drug that we seized the most, at least in 2025,” said Capt. Nathan Cihlar with the Wausau Police Department.

The 1,838 grams of meth seized in the last four months is equal to a tenth of a gram for roughly 46 percent of the city’s population. Nearly one-third of that was seized in one investigation.

“Just this past month, we had a single seizure with a single investigation that resulted in 600 grams,” Cihlar said. “That was a total for an annual amount that we had, say, back in 2021, 2022.”

Cihlar said the police department isn’t working alone. Marathon County’s diversion and deflection programs, along with drug court, are creating positive change. “In the last few years, through those programs and through working with our officers, they now understand that law enforcement is looking, or takes an interest in them, doing better in a pathway to being drug-free,” Cihlar said.

He added there is no real change in trends with how Wausau is located in relation to drug trafficking. Cihlar said they know the city has long been a highly used pathway between the Twin Cities, Green Bay, and the Milwaukee/Chicago area.
