COLD CAUSES TWO DEATHS

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 -- 9:18 AM

The cold has claimed two lives.

A 54-year-old newspaper deliveryman was found outside his car that got stuck in a snow bank near Monticello early Sunday morning. Donald Blum died of hypothermia Monday morning. Authorities believe he attempted to walk for help, then returned to his car and collapsed. He had been delivering the Wisconsin State Journal in the Monticello area since 2003.

In Sheboygan County, deputies say Robert Lewin of Lima, who would have turned 59 on Christmas Day, died of exposure in a farm field about a half mile from his home. A deputy found him at 8:15 a.m. Monday about 600 feet from his vehicle that was stuck in a ditch.

Temperatures were below zero with minus 25 to 35 degree wind chills.
