Wausau Man Found Guilty of Stabbing Incident

Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 -- 10:00 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A Wausau man found guilty of stabbing another man in May 2023 will serve prison time.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Jason Hopinka will spend five years in prison and five years on extended supervision, a sentence handed down by Judge Suzanne O’Neill.

The 42-year-old stabbed another man during an argument at a home on South 4th Avenue, then fled the scene before police arrived. Officers initially found the home empty, but about three hours later, a stab victim arrived at an area hospital.

They determined that the person was the victim. They were treated and released. Hopinka was identified as the suspect, and he was arrested a few hours later in rural Marathon County.

The sentence covers two counts for recklessly endangering safety and aggravated battery. Hopinka pleaded no contest to those charges back in May as part of a plea deal.

Prosecutors dropped a felony count for intimidating a witness as part of the deal. Terms of his sentence also include absolute sobriety from controlled substances and a no-contact order with two people. He was given credit for 27 days already served in jail.
