City of Wausau to Receive More Than $2.8 Million From PFAS Settlement

Tuesday, October 21st, 2025 -- 8:01 AM

(Kyle Pozorski, WAOW) - The City of Wausau has received more than $2.8M from a settlement with 3M over PFAS contamination in the city's municipal water systems.

According to Kyle Pozorski with WAOW, the payment is part of the phase one settlement with the abrasive products company. Mayor Doug Diny saying Friday, "this funding is a major win for Wausau residents."

According to a release from the mayors office, the city has received $2,861,180.69, adding to an earlier check with a combined total of approximately $2.929M. The release goes on to say that while the funds are significant, it will only partially offset the costs of Wausau's PFAS remediation efforts.

The mayor's office outlines three priorities for the funds including; offsetting capital expenses, reducing debt service and stabilizing rates. Officials are also further expecting additional funds from the DuPont Settlement and a Special Needs Fund.
