The most effective way to protect against influenza and its potentially serious complications is through annual vaccination.

The Clark County Health Department (CCHD) is again offering flu vaccination clinics. I spoke with Kelsey Wussow, Lead Public Health Nurse for Clark County, and she discussed the flu vaccine and the vaccination clinics in more detail.

"Getting a flu vaccine every year is the best way to protect yourself from the flu and the serious health problems it can cause. The CDC recommends that everyone age 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine, unless there’s a medical reason they should not."

"It is especially important for people 65 and older because they have a higher chance of getting very sick from the flu. The Clark County Health Department will once again be offering flu vaccine clinics throughout Clark County."

"For adults, we will be offering the standard-dose flu vaccine for individuals age 19 and older, as well as the high-dose flu vaccine for individuals age 65 and older. Individuals may get their flu shot at the Health Department in Neillsville, located in the Courthouse, Room 105 on Mondays, from 2:30 to 4pm.

"To better serve individuals living outside of the Neillsville-area, we have scheduled a flu vaccine clinic at the Thorp Fire Department on Tuesday, October 14th from 9am to 11:30am, the Colby Community Library on Wednesday, October 15th, starting at 9am, and ending at 11:30am and at the Clark County Rehab & Living Center in Owen on Tuesday, October 28th, from noon to 2pm."

"Adults with private health insurance must present their insurance cards prior to receiving their flu vaccine. The Health Department accepts select plans, including Medicare and Medicaid/BadgerCare."

"A full list of accepted insurance plans is available on our website or you may call our Immunization Hotline at (715) 743-5292 to inquire. For adults without insurance, a private pay option is also available. We accept cash, check, or card."

"Various other community-based clinics are scheduled at the public school districts in Clark County, during the month of October. At these special clinics, the flu vaccine will be available at no cost for children age 6 months through age 18, regardless of insurance status."

"Adults may also receive their flu vaccine at these clinics. For scheduling details, visit the Health Department’s website or call the Immunization Hotline at (715) 743-5292."

"Walk-ins are welcome at all clinics, but appointments are appreciated. To schedule an appointment, call our Immunization Hotline. As a final note: The COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for the 2025–26 respiratory season have not been officially announced yet, but they are expected within the next week."

"Updates will be posted on our website when the recommendation is available. It is our hope that these flu vaccine clinics provide a convenient, accessible, and a pleasant experience. We are excited to provide this important service & look forward to serving you very soon!"

Again, for more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the Clark County Health Department.
