Wood County Board of Supervisors Approves Accepting Funding for a School Resource Officer for the Auburndale School District

Friday, September 19th, 2025 -- 11:00 AM

(Kris Leonhardt, MMC Senior Editor) During its Sept. 16 meeting, the Wood County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to accept $60,000 in funding annually from Auburndale Schools to create a school resource deputy position in the district, according to Kris Leonhardt, MMC Senior Editor

“The remainder of 2025 will be entirely funded by school district funds. County budget funds, in addition to $60,000 in new contributions from the Auburndale School District, will be used to continue the position. Additional grant funding has been applied for that would support the position for the next three years,” explained Wood County Clerk Trent Miner During the Sept. 8 Public Safety Committee meeting.

Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker presented a resolution to amend the 2025 budget to fund a school resource officer position for Auburndale Schools through the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, which was passed unanimously.

“Wood County Sheriff’s Department (WCSD) has a long history of positive relationships with schools throughout the county. Most schools in municipalities with police departments already have school resource officers (SROs) on-site,” the resolution stated.

“WCSD deputies are a routine presence at Auburndale School District but are dispatched on an as-needed basis, limiting continuity and opportunities for relationship building with students, families and staff, and Auburndale School District administration has approached WCSD about establishing a School Resource Deputy program."

Auburndale School District serves approximately 850 students and employs a staff of 100. Auburndale does not have a municipal police department and relies on the county for law enforcement.

“The School District of Auburndale is excited to be working with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department to bring a school resource officer to the district.  An SRO will bring additional safety to the district as well as give students an opportunity to have a positive relationship with law enforcement,” said Auburndale School Administrator Steve Van Wyhe.

The position’s 2025 wages are listed at $23,976, with other benefits totaling $11,444.
